I chose to review this movie because of several reasons. The main reason being, it portrayed a disability in a way I could never imagined.
Barfi, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’ Cruz came out in the year 2012.
I had never watched this movie properly till sometime last year. The deaf culture, which we non-disabled people overlook so easily, is one that comes with its own share of problems. The major one being, communication.
And, as we know from the movie, it was all about friends, family, (some issues) and relationships. The latter requires communication. And when merged with deafness, it becomes slightly harder.
Harder, but not impossible.
The character of Barfi and Jhilmil just showed us that not being able to hear the sound of one that is important to you isn’t that necessary, the presence is.
Anyways, diverting from the topic a bit; my fondness with this movie lies with the decision I took after watching it. I began to learn sign language. There were more factors as to why I began learning it, but I adored the concept of being able to talk silently (you got to love the oxymoron).
I would suggest people to watch this movie to learn more about the deaf culture and the beauty of it.
