vox populi

noun

the opinions or beliefs of the majority

Whilst creating this issue, I thought of this short Latin phrase a lot. As much as we like it, or we don’t, there are so many things we do or see every day that are influenced by the rest of the population in some way or another. Each and every single one of our actions leaves a little imprint on society that ultimately becomes the cause to an effect that may or may not come to our notice.

Pop culture is one such aspect of this influence. Our taste in literature, music, clothing, art, films, and more are all somewhere, somehow tied in with someone else’s consumption of them. There are so many amazing books I wouldn’t have ever picked up had a friend not encouraged me to, so many movies that are incredible works of cinematography that I wouldn’t have taken the time out for had certain former members of this very magazine not constantly pressed me to watch.

While it isn’t necessarily something we can always control, we must be mindful of the pop culture we consume or incorporate into our lives. There are many good things in the world of pop culture, but there are also many that we shouldn’t immediately jump on the bandwagon for. Everything that lies outside of pop culture isn’t necessarily a ‘bad’ thing. There are little pockets of indigenous culture that may not suit everyone’s tastes or may not have skyrocketed to the same popularity as others that deserve the same care and affection pop culture gets.

This issue explores these numerous dimensions of pop culture. Read about what it would be like if pop culture wasn’t centralised around the West, indulge in the beauty of Indian classical dance, and observe intricate artwork that portrays the essence of popular perception. As always– there is something for everyone!

I hope you’re enjoying the monsoon as best as you can.
